Links for 8.12.08: Mog’s ad network, NIN’s HBO show, Napster’s fall, Snot’s demise…

*Social media: MOG has added Rick Rubin to its board and has also created a music blog ad network. For me, MOG has always been in a weird in-between space that I couldn’t connect to on any level. Not social enough to be a good social media tool, not enough stats to compete with last.fm. I still have found no good reason to log on.

*NIN: Trent Reznor’s Zero may become an HBO series? I think Ian McShane should star.

*Business: Napster subscriptions are down 52,000 subscribers in Q2 over Q1. Tough times. I still think someone will crack subscription music. I can’t stand managing files; it’s a waste of my time. (Though I still have found no better alternative.)

*Local: Snot, of Puke and Snot, has died. One half of the most famous Renaissance Festival pair of all time has passed away at the age of 57. First Bernie Mac, now this. Ugh.

*Celebrities: TMZ has dug up some Ryan Seacrest beefcake photography. BEFORE he was bitten by that shark.

*Toys: The Teddy Bear MP3 player makes it easy to listen to digital music. Even if you are 12-18 months old.

*Local: If you don’t want to go to a Rage Against the Machine concert during the Republican National Convention, you could consider putting up an Unconvention yard sign. [metblog mpls]

*Hello: It’s my brother’s birthday. Happy birthday, Ian. You are almost as old as Jesus.

Links for 7.29.08: Jay-Z’s ring, a shark’s failure, a Zimmerman release…

*Good music: The Walkmen’s new album, “You & Me,” is available on Amie Street for $5. That is pretty cheap. [universal]

*SHARK ATTACK: American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest was bitten by a shark recently. On the toe. He took some aspirin to treat the wound.

*Jewelry: Jay-Z has been spotted wearing a wedding ring. Unrelated: He is married.

*If you would be interested in taking a leak: A new R. Kelly album (12 Play: 4th Quarter) has leaked. You can maybe go find a torrent of it. Leaked. Heh. [digital music news]

*Art: Banksy is Robin Gunningham according to Time magazine. Also, how about that feces painting!? Wild! [mediaeater]

*Musicals: The von Trapp family villa is finally open! Now considering a “Sound of Music”-themed vacation to Salzburg for late August. (Not kidding.)

*Intertwined industries: Ars Technica on Rock Band, Guitar Hero and music sales. [ypulse]

*Local: Peefork reviews St. Anthony Park barista Haley Bonar’s “Big Star.” 7.1!

*Local: Robert Zimmerman rarities released! Watch for Tell Tale Signs. Where was this local singer/songwriter when I was a child?

*Geek instruments: Zelda ocarina’s on sale for $40 at ThinkGeek. [geekologie]

*I have been getting up around 5:15 am. FUCKERS.

Links for 6.13.08: Kelly’s free, Weezer’s wired, Idol’s sued…

*Is American Idol screwing the backup musicians out of money they’ve rightfully earned? Well, those dudes are suing the show. On a semi-related note: I may be the only person in America who is fascinated by Ryan Seacrest.

*R. Kelly was acquitted of all child pornography charges on Friday. Hmmf.

*If you are interested in the mainstream media, you may wish to check out Rolling Stone‘s Bonnaroo 2008 coverage.

*Weezer invites fans to jam with them on their current tour. From the internet celeb viral to the use of manga for marketing to the jam-with-us invite – somebody in the Weezer camp has been paying attention.

*Video: My buddy in the former Soviet Union recorded video of traditional Sukhishvili Georgian Dance. It gets pretty crazy when the swords come out.

*Tim Russert died. Sucks.
